Ivey Film Festival
On Wednesday, March 4th HBA students at Ivey hosted a film festival highlighting the movie-making abilities of students from the University of Western Ontario, including Brescia, King’s, and Huron. The Ivey Film Festival (IFF) was sponsored by CTV Globe Media and operated with the support of the University Students Council, Ivey HBA Program, and the Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship.
“We have three main goals,” says Gabe Diamond, IFF chairperson. “First, we want to promote well roundedness through student expression and development of multimedia skills. The second goal is to provide a platform for aspiring filmmakers to show their films and interact with industry experts, and lastly to provide an extra medium to address contemporary social, economic and political issues.” The IFF is an attempt to do something a little less traditional at the school.
Awards on the night were given for achievement in Overall Film Excellence (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), Best Action, Best Comedy, Best Drama, Social Impact Award, and CTV People’s Choice Award. The judging panel included experts from Alliance Films, Disney, Nelvana, and CBC.
Overall, the IFF executive was extremely happy with the outcome. The volume of submissions vastly exceeded their expectations and they were thrilled with the audience turnout. Filmmaking is an under-served market on campus which traditionally lacks student initiative. Diamond noted, “Since it can be difficult to begin a career in the entertainment industry, we wanted to bring this community together to help aspiring filmmakers get their foot in the door. Luckily, we were able to do achieve this in an entertaining way.”
Hopefully, the success of the night will make the Ivey Film Festival an annual tradition that will continue to inspire students to creatively express themselves.
