Recently the Entrepreneurship Institute hosted Eventi Capital Partners (ECP) to share some stories of successful start-ups. Eventi Capital Partners is a Toronto-based investment group specializing in non-traditional investments, ranging from the rapidly emerging technology sector to the alternative investments found in hedge funds and private equity. The entire presentation was fantastic and had some great key learning points. Although this post does the real presentation no justice, there are some points worth sharing:
- There are four stages that a business can go through: Concept, Prove, Focus and Harden. At each of these stages there are distinct things that an entrepreneur should be focusing on.
- Concept: This is where you have extremely limited resources and require experts to validate your business idea.
- Prove: At this stage your venture can begin to attract seed capital. Here you require some creativity to stretch your funding, and resilience to tough out the hard times.
- Focus: This is the stage where you might attract some angel funding. Here you need good leaders and decision makers. You also need good generalists who can wear many hats.
- Harden: This is the point in the venture when you need managers in specific areas with functional specializations. At this point, if you can’t bring on the right people and manage them correctly with the correct incentive system YOU WILL FAIL!
- Know what to measure and what to prove – not everything in your business is important. Find those key metrics and determine what is critical to get to the next step. Develop a balanced scorecard to show: What is important, what activities drive those metrics and how you can do those activities.
- Your company can be the best at things that don’t matter but it’s not going to move you forward.
- In Canada, we don’t do a great job of glorifying our entrepreneurs. The US does a much better job, and Americans are the ones willing to write the big cheques – how can we change this?
